Reflections 05#
Just a week ago I broke my finger in right hand. This is of course a nuisance in the ordinary activities of everyday life, but most of all it bothers me that I can’t write. I started wondering how people in old times lived without writing skills. Only a small part of the society had access to learning to write, and the rest were illiterate. For example when I want to give vent to emotions or clear up my mind I write my thoughts in notebook. And how they did that? Among the uneducated people, the only existing communication was the "live" one - they couldn’t send letters. Sometimes when I have many things to do, I make a list to remember everythig, and they didn’t have that opportunity. I came to the conclusion that I am happy that I live in times when the vast majority of people can write, because I personally can’t imagine, don’t have such skills.
Oddly enough, the times you're talking about are not so distat in the past. Before World War II, 80% of people living in the coutryside (peasants), especially in the east and south of Poland, were illiterate, i.e. couldn't read or write .
